Central Florida's Brain Injury Support
Group helps hundreds of Floridians with brain injuries and their
families to find support, improve communication and build community.
Orlando, FL- Mary was a loving wife, a mother of four, active community
member, church-going nurse. Seven years ago she was admitted to a
community hospital for a routine procedure. Everyone expected Mary to
come out that afternoon unscathed, however due to an error, Mary was
left profoundly brain-damaged. Faced with an incapacitated adult, Mary’s
family was at a loss. Mary and her family are not alone.
According to the center for Head Injury
Services, a traumatic brain injury occurs every 15 seconds, totaling two
million times per year. 25 percent require hospitalization and leave
70,000 to 90,000 people permanently disabled. This implies that 70,000
to 90,000 families find themselves in similar situations to Mary’s every
year. Few families are fully aware of the available resources or where
to find local support.
Johnny Pineyro, Treasurer of the Central Florida Support Group (CFSG) states, “few people understand what it means to suffer a traumatic brain injury in this country. In fact, the diagnosis goes missed the majority of the time in our hospitals. The more people become aware of the injury and how to treat it, the more likely we are to improve recovery time.”
Johnny Pineyro, Treasurer of the Central Florida Support Group (CFSG) states, “few people understand what it means to suffer a traumatic brain injury in this country. Striving to educate and aid in recovery, the
CFSG is located in Orlando and serves individuals and families that have
been impacted by a brain injury. Pineyro notes, “the brain injury
support group provides the injured with options,” such as educational
seminars about brain injuries and how to communicate the the injured,
entertainment and support groups to help build a community among
members. “I felt so alone after my brother’s injury, although the
support group has shown me I’m not alone. I’ve made really good friends,
and have developed more patience for my brother’s forgetfulness” states
one group member who asked to remain anonymous. The CFSG encourages its
members to participate in their brain games, movies, and variety of
other support programs.
Every year, hundreds of Central Floridians lives are impacted by traumatic brain injuries and the CFSG has been there for each of them. The organization plans to continue to grow and offer additional services. Pinyero is proud to have assisted in the creation of the CFSG and the people they help.
