An 11-month-old child flown to a hospital with severe head trauma a few days ago has died, according to sheriff's detectives.
Detectives said the girl died Friday after she was taken to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville for treatment on Wednesday.
An autopsy was conducted on Saturday on the child, whose name has not been released. Officials have not released a cause or manner of death.
No one has been charged.
On Wednesday night, sheriff's deputies went to Munroe Regional Medical Center and were informed medical officials were treating an infant who was unresponsive and had been placed on life support.
Further information revealed one of the victim's guardians, a woman, had returned to her Summerfield home from work on Wednesday and found the child lifeless and called 911.
Deputies were later told that the child's 2-year-old brother reportedly had accidentally dropped a helmet on his sister.
The guardians, whose names were not being released, are described as a boyfriend and girlfriend.
The Department of Children and Families has custody of the brother.
