LAKEWOOD — The 67-year-old woman whose daughter is charged with her murder died because she was struck in the head while suffering from heart disease, according to the autopsy results, said Michel A. Paulhus, executive assistant Ocean County Prosecutor.
The county Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy Friday on the victim, Claudette Foster, Paulhus said.
The autopsy results showed the cause of death were two-fold: First, she suffered from coronary artery disease and second, she was struck by a blunt force object, leading to the manner of death — homicide, Paulhus said.
Officials said Claudette Foster may have died about a week before her body was found Thursday in her home at the Original Leisure Village, a gated retirement community in Lakewood.
Foster's daughter, Lisa Marie Foster, 45, who also lived at the home, was charged with murder later that day, Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said.
On Saturday, Foster remained in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River, held in lieu of $300,000 bail set by state Superior Court Judge Stephanie M. Wauters.
The discovery of the dead woman came after police received a call late Thursday morning summoning medical help to Claudette Foster’s address on Chatham Court, officials said.
When police and emergency responders arrived, the door was shut. They went inside to render help and discovered Claudette Foster’s body. Her daughter, who also lived at the address, was not at home, but arrived while police were at the house, officials said.
Foster was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Family members from out of state said they had been concerned before the discovery of Claudette Foster’s body, when her daughter made a troubling phone call to her maternal uncle in Florida.
The victim’s brothers were unable to reach their sister by telephone and could not reach their niece before learning the news about the death, family members said Friday.
