Tributes after tragic death of council head's grandson

Thursday, March 01, 2012

TRIBUTES have been pouring in for the grandson of the current Isles of Scilly council chairman, who was found dead on St Mary's after a night drinking. Lewis Hicks, 25, son of St Mary's boatman Stephen and Oriel Hicks, and grandson of Mike Hicks and his wife Jocelyn, had just returned to the islands from a cruise ship job.
A merchant seaman, he was staying at a friend's house in Hugh Town on the night he died. Police were called to the property just after 7am on Saturday by ambulance control.
A police spokeswoman later told The Cornishman: "We are not treating it as suspicious. Police have been told by local people that they believed he had been drinking the night before.
"We will look to establish his movements on the night but the post-mortem examination will tell us what his blood alcohol levels were."
Lewis's Facebook page has been inundated with tributes, including one from his mum, Oriel, who wrote: "How can it be that we won't see your beautiful grin or hear your sharp witty comments ever again? I cannot comprehend it yet. Lewis we loved you so much."
Friend Marcus Blake wrote: "There are no words or no actions that will express how much I will miss you. You were a true friend to me and many more.
"You always made me smile and always dragged me out of sad times. I will miss our chats, our laughs and our stupid antics. But there is nothing I will miss more than just being in your amazing presence."
Lindsey Purse said: "Missing you so much already Lewis! I can't believe you've gone. Me and Daisy raised many glasses to you last night. Just felt so, so wrong that you weren't there.
"We're dedicating our beer fest to you this weekend, thought you'd like that. It was a privilege to be your friend, I've got so many good memories of you, I hope you're making them laugh as much up there as you made us laugh down here."
Kayleigh Lewis wrote: "It was six years ago we were together and you're still making me cry now! So glad we were still good friends and that I got to see you recently. I'll miss you so much."
As a mark of respect, the Five Islands School PTA has cancelled its Mamma Mia Film Night this Friday.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the mainland later this week.
