A woman was arrested after a vehicle she was driving struck a Charlestown High School teacher and possibly another person about 7 p.m. Tuesday as they walked in front of the school, police said.
The teacher, Nicole Keith-Morrison, 30, of Charlestown, underwent surgery at University Hospital for a fractured skull and bleeding on her brain, and suffered neck and vertebrae injuries, the Greater Clark County Schools district said in a press release. She was listed in stable condition at the hospital Wednesday.
Natalie Miller, 30, of Charlestown was charged on a preliminary basis with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle with a minor passenger while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury.
According to Charlestown police, she was driving a Pontiac Grand Am eastbound on Park Street in front of the school, with her 7-year-old son in the car, when the vehicle struck Keith-Morrison and possibly Ryan Akemon, also 30, while they walked eastbound along the street.
Keith-Morrison was taken by helicopter to University Hospital. Akemon, who had a wrist injury, didn’t know if she was hit by the car or was injured by her friend being thrown into her, police said. Further information about Akemon’s injury and treatment wasn’t available from police Wednesday.
Police said Miller told them she had been smoking marijuana before the accident and was taking Lortab, a prescription pain killer. Neither Miller nor her son were injured.
Surgeons who operated on Keith-Morrison are optimistic about her prospects for a full recovery, the school district said.
She has taught in the district for seven years and is now teaching 12th grade government, economics and advanced placement classes. She also is chairwoman of the social studies department.
The police said Miller is in the Clark County Jail, where she is being held on a $10,000 full cash bond.
