Duncan teen killed in Sunday hit-and-run

Duncan teen Daniel Hopkins has died of serious head injuries and a 24-year-old woman is charged with leaving the scene of an accident after a hit-and-run on Boys Road early Sunday morning.
A passerby found Hopkins lying on the street near the Cowichan Tribes reserve around 5: 30 a.m.
He was taken by ambulance to Cowichan District Hospital and then was moved to Victoria General Hospital, where he was listed as being in critical condition and placed on life support.
Hopkins was taken off life support just before 8 p.m. Sunday night.
Police have asked that the family's privacy be respected "during their time of grief and loss," police said.
The woman believed to have been involved in the hit-and-run turned herself in to police at 8 a.m. Monday. A white SUV was seized by police for examination.
Duncan RCMP spokesman Cpl. Kevin Day said the woman was released from custody on Monday evening. Her next court appearance is slated for June 5.
"Alcohol appears to be a factor on the part of both the victim and the suspect at the time of the incident," Day said.
Police would not say Monday if the young man was with anyone at the time or if there were any possible witnesses.
Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP at 2507485522 or Crime Stoppers at 1800222-TIPS (8477).
