CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -
Three people are dead and one remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a head-on collision on Highway 71 in Caddo Parish Saturday morning.
Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Cindy Chadwick says it happened about three miles north of the split between Highways 1 and 71 around 10:00 a.m. Investigators say a Chevy Tahoe was traveling southbound and the GMC Terrain was heading northbound, when for some reason the Tahoe crossed over into the northbound lane, hitting the Terrain head-on. A witness says the Tahoe was southbound and suddenly crossed the centerline and struck the Terrain.
Chadwick says the driver of the Terrain, 82-year-old M.B. Wilson and passenger 78-year-old Edwena K. Wilson both died at the scene.
Emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to get the passenger of the Tahoe, 65-year-old Sondra Clark out of the SUV. Sondra Clark was taken by helicopter to LSU Health. The driver of the Tahoe 67-year-old Layne Clark was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Both were in critical condition. Sondra Clark later died as a result of her injuries.
Chadwick says the crash is being investigated by the Caddo Sheriff's Traffic Safety Unit. Investigators say all of the victims are elderly and all were wearing their seatbelts.
