MURFREESBORO
— A man who befriended a 14-year-old girl over the Internet while
serving in the military in Iraq had an inappropriate sexual relationship
with her once he returned to the United States, according to police.
Now 28-year-old Christopher N. Bonick is behind bars at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center facing an aggravated statutory rape charge. He also faces other charges as the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office continues investigating his activities with girls in other U.S. states.
Bonick, whose military status is now inactive, was picked by authorities in Fort Smith, Ark., on an outstanding warrant after being stopped by police there for a broken tail-light violation, according to Murfreesboro Police officials. Detectives said he was working at a Walmart there.
Murfreesboro Police Detective Tommy Roberts began investigating Bonick in January, he reported in an MPD arrest report. He received a tip that Bonick had engaged in sexual activity with a girl.
Roberts interviewed the girl and learned she had met Bonick in an Internet chat room. She further stated that after chatting with him, "she agreed to have him pick her up from school one afternoon."
During his investigation, Roberts said he learned that Bonick picked the girl up at a local high school in October 2011 and took her to the Best Western on Chaffin Place, where they engaged in "sexual intercourse."
When Roberts interviewed Bonick about that incident later, Roberts reported that Bonick "confirmed" the information.
At the time Roberts interviewed Bonick, he was living in Nashville, according to Roberts' report.
Metro Nashville Police conducted a search warrant on Bonick's home and computers, and communications between the victim and Bonick were discovered, according to Roberts.
He fled before police could make an arrest, and wasn't discovered until he was stopped in Arkansas for a tail-light violation. By then, Bonick had outstanding warrants for his arrest.
According to police, Bonick may have other victims across the country, which is why the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office is now following up on several leads, according to Roberts' report.
Bonick remained jailed as of this morning.
