Coroner: Urbana boy, 3, dies of shot to head; Police say death an apparent accident
URBANA, Ill. (AP) — The Champaign County Coroner says an autopsy confirms a 3-year-old Urbana boy died of a gunshot wound to the head in what investigators believe was an accident.
Coroner Duane Northrup said Thursday that Mekhi Woods died Wednesday night at Carle Foundation Hospital. The autopsy was performed Thursday.
Authorities tell The (Champaign) News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/JhXVtr ) the child's 14-year-old uncle is being held at the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center. Prosecutors will decide whether to charge him with a crime.
Urbana police responding to a report that a child had been shot found the wounded boy. That's when police saw the 14-year-old leaving a home with a handgun.
Police Lt. Bryant Seraphin says the teen was distraught. He says the teen was handling the gun when he unintentionally shot his nephew.
