A simple drive home turned into a deadly shooting for Jose Alvarado of Lamont.
"It's devastating," said his niece who only wanted to be identified as Elizabeth.
The Sheriffs Office said around 11 p.m. Thursday, Alvarado was driving south on Weedpatch Highway near Lamont, when he passed a slower moving vehicle in front of him.

That car sped up to Alvarado, and tailgated him while flashing its high beams.
He turned onto several side streets to try and lose the vehicle, eventually ending up at Elizabeth's house on Panama Road.
"He must have come here to try to lose them," said Elizabeth.
But that vehicle managed to find him and pulled up behind his car.
Elizabeth says that's when Alvarado got out and started arguing with them.
“They got out of the car and put a gun to his head," said Elizabeth.
At that point a passenger in Alvarado's car got out and ran.
"I think she was so scared that she jumped our fence to get to our house as fast as she could," said Elizabeth.
Elizabeth says the occupants of the other vehicle fired two gunshots and sped off before she, her aunt and mother ran outside where they found Alvarado on the ground.
"I saw blood on the side of his head and his face was swollen. It didn't even look like him," said Elizabeth.
Elizabeth called 911 while her aunt administered CPR.
"My mother and aunt were kneeling beside him and were hysterical," said Elizabeth.
Alvarado was shot in the head and died at the scene.
Investigators are looking into the possibility of road rage.
"Road rage in eneral, if you get upset it's best to let it go. Why do you have to take it to that extent? To the point of shooting someone to take someone's life away? No, you can't bring them back," said neighbor Mirella Armijo.
Relatives say they don't know if Alvarado knew the occupants in the other car.
Investigators are still looking for those people.
