Family deals with loss of second man to a tragic car accident

ANTHONY, N.M. —
Tragedy strikes a southern New Mexico family twice as a second man is killed in a car accident.

Andrew Valenzuela, 22, died from his injuries Wednesday after he ran a stop sign at the intersection of Vinton Road and Westside Road outside of Anthony, N.M. Valenzuela crashed into a truck and spun off into a farm.

His girlfriend, Karla Diaz, 21 gave birth to a premature baby girl after the accident. Diaz and the baby died at the hospital.

The couple's 2-year-old son is in critical condition.
Deputies said no one in the car was wearing a seatbelt.
KFOX14 learned that Valenzuela was arrested in February for failing to appear in court after he was cited for not properly restraining his child in the car. Officials said the child's car seat was not buckled correctly either.

KFOX14 learned that Alberto Valenzuela, Andrew's older brother, also died in a car accident in July 2007. He was 21 years old.
Alberto Valenzuela lost control going north onHighway 28 and wrapped his car around a tree. Officials said they found open containers of alcohol in the car.

"It's actually a real shame because it's the same way his brother died," family friend Adrian Munoz said.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff's office said Alberto Valenzuela was also given a ticket in August 2004 for running that same stop sign on Vinton and Westside where Andrew died.

Josie Bazan is a family friend who knew the boys' mother for about 15 years.

"I just feel so sorry for her," Bazan said. "When you lose a son in an accident like that it's so sad. You don't even have time to say goodbye or anything. One of the worst things that can happen to you is to lose a child."

KFOX14 tried speaking with Diaz's family but they said they're still in a state of shock and want to be alone with family.
