STUDENT INCREASING AWARENESS OF BRAIN INJURYBy ABCMT Staff
MISSOULA - A 2012 graduate of Hellgate High School is helping spread awareness about traumatic brain injuries one helmet at a time.
Nichols sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of a motor vehicle crash in September 2010. She focused her senior project on spreading awareness about traumatic brain injury (TBI). She held a fund-raiser entitled "Educating Educators about Students with Traumatic Brain Injury" and all proceeds were donated to the Brain Injury Association of Montana (BIAMT).
Sierra has been instrumental in the BIAMT 4th Annual Helmet Giveaway. Sierra connected BIAMT with local law firms and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association (MTLA) who have contributed 175 multi-sport helmets.
This Sunday's helmet giveaway is in conjunction with the Missoula Osprey Kid’s Day. Gates open at 4:30 pm and the game begins at 5:05 pm. The multi-sport helmets are professionally fitted by Community Medical Center rehabilitation specialists.
Sierra has long term plans of working with BIAMT to aid TBI survivors and their families in support and recovery and to continue to educate the community and state about traumatic brain injury. Sierra has not yet reached her full recovery potential but is well on her way with the support of her family, friends, medical providers and the staff at BIAMT.
