Bay crash victims to survive

A Tauranga teen, whose head hit the windscreen of a car on Saturday, is now in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital’s Children’s ward.

The teen suffered serious head injuries as a result of the crash on Maunganui Road, near Spur Avenue, around 3pm.

The 14-year-old hit by a car on Saturday is now in a ward after spending the weekend in Tauranga Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriot says the teen was initially admitted to the intensive care unit but has now been moved to a ward.

In a separate incident on the same night, a 61-year-old Papamoa man suffered serious arm, leg, torso and pelvic injuries when the motorbike he was riding collided with a van on Maunganui Road, near Girven Road, around 5.30pm.

Sergeant Mike Owen says alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The man was admitted to Tauranga Hospital’s intensive care unit in a serious but stable condition.

Diana says the man is still in the unit in a stable condition.

She says a 48-year-old man was also brought to hospital following a crash on SH2, near Aongatete on Saturday.

“He was treated and discharged.”

Sergeant Mike Owen says this many serious accidents in a short time frame is a rare occurrence and he hopes it serves as a timely reminder for all road users to drive to the conditions and to be aware of other road users.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police are continuing their investigations into all three accidents.

“Thankfully all of those involved will survive,” he says.
