SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - Alma Aboites-Acosta was sentenced to 20 years in prison for injuries she caused to an infant in 2008 in Hays County.
According to Hays County Criminal District Attorney Sherri Tibbe, in late 2008 the 8-month-old girl was taken to the emergency room where doctors found she was bleeding from the brain and suffered from severe bruising to her right shoulder.
When the injuries happened, the girl was under the care of Aboites-Acosta. Medical experts said it was unlikely that her injuries were caused by accident.
The trial took place last month in state District Judge Charles Ramsay’s court. Aboites-Acosta elected to have her punishment decided by Ramsay. She was convicted on two counts of injury to a child, a first-degree felony, and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Tibbe said her office recommended that Aboites-Acostabe given no less than 20 years.
"We must send a message that child abuse will not be tolerated," Tibbe said in a news release.
